winter

When you drive in the winter, you will encounter less than ideal roads at some point. These can be snow covered, slippery, or even have black ice. As snow accumulates on the road, it can build up and freeze. This will result in difficult driving, especially if the temperatures are right around freezing. Before you drive in the winter, it is always a good idea to check the weather conditions, and the road conditions. This way you can be prepared for what conditions you might be driving into or on.

Tires

The tires should be checked for several things. The first is the tread wear. Tread that is ideal will help you to grip and handle the vehicle properly. If the tread is low, you may notice that the vehicle slides on the road. If it has been misting or is around freezing, you may encounter black ice. This can be dangerous because black ice cannot be seen until you are on it. Black ice is most common over bridges and over passes. You can check the tread by placing a penny upside down in one of the tread grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, then a tire replacement might be recommended. Bring the vehicle in and we can inspect the tires for you. A tire rotation can help the tires last longer, especially how they wear.

Air Pressure

Also remember to check the air pressure in each tire. In the winter, the air pressure may decrease more often than during the rest of the year. Make sure to check the air pressure before you drive. After driving, the tires may give a false reading on how much air pressure is there. If the tires seem to be low on air often, make sure that you bring the vehicle in. We can check for the source of the issue and have it repaired.
