distracted driving

Distracted driving can become a serious issue if you don’t pay attention. Not only can you get injured, but those around you can as well. Limit the amount of distractions you have when you are driving. This can be anything. It can include eating, changing the radio, looking at your cell phone, or trying to get something that fell on the floor. Make sure you know what may distract you, so you can improve the safety when you drive.

Drowsy Driving

If you’re driving while you are sleepy, you could be putting everyone at harm on the road. To help combat drowsiness, there are some tips. Work on planning your schedule ahead of time and allow for down time so you don’t feel too tired to drive. If you’re not sure if you are too tired, then you probably are. If you can’t fight the drowsiness park in a safe spot and take a 15-20 minute nap or take a walk for fresh air.

Plug in Electronics while parked

Make sure if you use a phone or GPS and try to plug it in, you do so while parked. Listening to music, chatty kids, looking at yourself in the rear view mirror, and daydreaming are all distractions that could cause harm while driving. Be mindful of these temptations ahead of time, so you don’t fall victim to them.

Be aware of the road

Even if you follow the rules of the road and are perfect at reading the traffic signs, you are still prey to other drivers. The anticipation of dangerous situations is more than half of the battle when it comes to safe driving. Keep your eye-line on the road’s horizon and not on the car in front of you. Look both ways at intersections for any potential cars that might run the red light or try to beat you by turning during a yellow light at an intersection. Make sure you leave at least 2-3 seconds between you and the car in front of you. Also, make sure you use your turn signal.

Plan ahead when you drive

No matter what the season is, you need to know how the weather will affect your commute. Leaving earlier or later to avoid traffic is one way to reduce your chances of an accident.  You will also want to check to see the temperature, as this can affect the roads. Be aware of any precipitation like rain, sleet, or snow. If the weather is less than ideal, than your driving should be adjust accordingly. By doing this, you can help prevent distracted driving and accidents.
